"NO PLACE FOR VIOLENCE" edited by Jocelyn Proulx and Sharon Perrault is the first in a series of books co-published by RESOLVE and Fernwood books. Staff and board members of RESOLVE and friends of the editors and contributors will gather at McNally Robinson Book Store October 23 to launch the series and this exciting first book . We are particularly pleased that our first publication presents the voices of First Nations peoples. "No Place For Violence" is a compilation of first nations analysis, strategies and programs for addressing the problem of family violence in their communities. RESOLVE's operating principle of partnership with the community is reflected in the studies that preceded the manuscript and characterized the production of the book itself. Our book series is designed to celebrate the productivity of our partnerships with the community. Look for our upcoming publications: Book 2 "Pieces of a Puzzle: Perspectives on Child Sexual Abuse" edited by Diane Hiebert Murphy and Linda Burnside will be launched in the Spring of 2001, and Book 3 "Women Abused by Intimate Partners: Challenges and Solutions" edited by Leslie Tutty and Carolyn Goard will be launched in the Spring of 2002.

Research Day

November is Family Violence Prevention Month in Manitoba. In observation of this critical issue and in celebration of our partnerships with community agencies RESOLVE Manitoba is pleased to invite all of our colleagues at University and in Service Agencies to our RESEARCH DAY -- NOVEMBER 16. A full day of papers and panels will feature the research we have conducted with our community partners and our keynote speaker of the day is Elly Danica, author of "Don't: A Woman's Word" and "Beyond Don't". We will also have a book table with current literature in the field. Watch for our upcoming mail-out for details on registration and location. If you have any questions or would like to participate on a panel call us at our office (204) 474-8965.

Working Group on Domestic Violence

This spring/summer Sharon Perrault and Jane Ursel participated on the City of Winnipeg Working Group on Domestic Violence. The Working Group was created after a tragic double domestic homicide resulted from a failure to promptly respond to a number of 911 calls. The Working Group, chaired by Councillor Jenny Gerbasi, filed its report and recommendations with the City of Winnipeg July 6. The Working Group recommended:

1. Mandatory Professional Development for the City of Winnipeg Police on Domestic Violence.
2. A pilot project teaming social workers with police officers in a Domestic Violence Intervention Unit.
3. A Process for on-going monitoring of police response to domestic violence calls.
4. Inclusion of Emergency Response/911 Communications Centre staff in debriefing sessions with respect to crisis incidents.
5. Professional Development for Emergency Response/911 Communications Centre staff with respect to dealing with conflicting and ambiguous information.

6. Investigation of the use of a 311 number for non-emergency calls.

Congratulations to the City of Winnipeg Police Service for creating the position of Domestic Violence Co-Ordinator this summer! We look forward to working with Sargent Rae Pratt in this new position.
