Winnipeg Foundation Funds RESOLVE Newsletter

L to R: Dr. Jane Ursel (RESOLVE), Rick Lucier (Wpg.Fndn.),Brenda Comaskey (RESOLVE)

We're Back! Welcome to our first newsletter as RESOLVE.  Formerly the Manitoba Research Centre on Family Violence and Violence Against Women, we are now a tri-provincial research network committed to community-university partnerships to find solutions to violence. In 1992, Health Canada and the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council announced funding to five family violence research centres across Canada, for a five-year period. In order to improve the longevity of the prairie research centre, based in Winnipeg, it was determined that the scope should be expanded to include Alberta and Saskatchewan. Now, RESOLVE ~ Research and Education for Solutions to Violence and Abuse ~ has offices in all three provinces and is forging strong links with universities and community groups.

The goals of RESOLVE include:

  • working with community groups to identify important gaps in our knowledge about family violence;
  • developing action-oriented research projects to examine the full range of issues related to family violence;
  • working in inter-disciplinary teams in partnership with community groups and other universities and centres in western Canada;
  • generating and evaluating strategies to address the various manifestations of family violence;
  • playing an active role in communicating results to the public and policy makers;
  • promoting awareness, reform and social change;
  • training students and members of community organizations in family violence research methods.

The Winnipeg Foundation has graciously given support to the production of our newsletter for a one year period. Thank you to Rick Lucier and everyone at the Foundation for their generosity. Contributions to RESOLVE assist in research, consultation and maintenance of the library.
The newsletter will be published quarterly. Any submissions, announcements and enquiries can be directed to the RESOLVE office in eachof the three provinces (see page 8) or to the editor, Brenda Comaskey, RESOLVE Manitoba, (ph.) 204.474.7410, (fax) 204.474.7686.
