November is Domestic ViolencePrevention Month

Manitoba Events
On November 5, Family    Services and Housing Minister Tim Sale announced additional annual fundingof $424,000 for domestic violence prevention services and women’s sheltersin Manitoba. Diane McGifford, Minister Responsible for the Status of Womenand Justice Minister Gord Mackintosh also attended the event at the Nor’WestCo-op Community Health Centre marking the beginning of Domestic ViolencePrevention Month.
Jackie Lavallee, Director of Ikwe-Widdjiitiwin and board member ofRESOLVE states: “
We are pleased with this announcement.  It will provide a full-timeoutreach/follow-up worker in each of the ten shelters in Manitoba. Further, a new ‘flexible stay policy’ will ensure better client servicesin our shelters.”  Other activities include: 
• a province-wide mailing of domestic violence prevention brochuresto hospitals, libraries and community service agencies; 
• a multimedia campaign, “Promises aren’t the only things that getbroken.” (see above); 
• awareness workshops for government staff working in telephone andin-person reception; 
• the mayors of Thompson and Portage La Prairie proclaimed Novemberto be Domestic Violence Prevention Month in their respective cities.

Alberta Events

November 1-6 was Turn Off the Violence Week in
     Calgary. This public awareness campaign isa collaborative effort between Boys and Girls Community Services, GirlGuides of Canada, Scouts Canada, Calgary Board of Education, Calgary CatholicBoard of Education, and the Action Committee Against Violence.  
     The Office for the Prevention of Family Violence sponsored their 13th provincial Family Violence Awareness Month Campaign. This year’s theme is “Building Resilient Children and Youth” and partnersinclude AADAC and Save the Children Canada.  Public education kitsare available free of charge in Alberta from the Office at 780. 422.5916.  
     The Lethbridge Interagency Group activitiesfor November include: “Say No to Violence” – children, youth, and adultscan leave hand prints with their pledge of peace and these will be postedat Park Place Mall; and a  “Safety Audit” – community members willbe asked to identify areas of the city or particular buildings where theydo not feel safe.  The information will then be shared with the authorities.
     The Town Councils of Millet and Morinville,Alberta have both passed resolutions proclaiming the month of November1999 as Family Violence Prevention Month in their respective towns. 

Saskatchewan Events

Congratulations to the City of Regina foryour 
      contribution to Family Violence Prevention! On September 23 and 24th, Jane Ursel and Sharon Perrault participated ina conference sponsored by the City of Regina entitled, “Moving Towardsa Preventative Context: Family Violence Prevention Strategies.”  Janegave a keynote address on the evening of the 23rd and Jane and Sharon participatedon a Prevention Strategies panel the following morning.  The conferencewas well-attended by service providers and advocates in Regina.
