U of M Start-up Technologies Make Top Ten List

The University of Manitoba Technology Transfer Office (TTO) provides a spectrum of intellectual property services to the University and to the larger community.  Over the past two decades, the TTO has launched more than 30 new Canadian start-up companies.  This corps of commercial organizations has included Cangene (Canada’s largest biotech company), Lorus Therapeutics, YM Biosciences, Medicure and BioMark Technologies.

“Our goal is to move new, promising, platform technologies along the commercialization continuum as rapidly as possible.  Often, this objective is accomplished by launching new Canadian start-ups,” said Gary Breit, executive director.

The two University of Manitoba TOP TEN start-ups are:

Diamedica Inc.  – a biopharmaceutical company that has developed a novel approach to treating type 2 diabetes based on a newly corroborated mechanism.

Sanomune Inc. - a biotech start-up focused on neurological and autoimmune diseases.  The Company's technology is based on a proprietary repurposing of a safe, oral biological to treat large market indications.

The third Manitoba company, Kane Biotech Inc., is developing products for the prevention and dispersal of biofilms focused on the genetic mechanisms of biofilm formation.

Previous University of Manitoba start-up winners include YM BioScience.

“Today, we are working with BioMark Technologies, a Manitoba-based manufacturer of cancer diagnostics and with Cats Eye Capital, a group of talented engineers and venture capitalists in British Columbia, who are working to launch a new company that will deliver passive, wireless monitoring solutions that reduce infrastructure costs.  And, we are working with one of our community’s most experienced entrepreneurs to launch a company that will deliver a web-based, peer-testing solution for busy faculty members and financially-constrained administrators,” said Breit.
