Biomedical Engineering

Alzheimer's treatment volunteers needed:  Repetitive Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (rTMS)

Do you have a beloved family member or know someone with probable Alzheimer’s? If yes, you may wish to enroll him/her into this treatment clinical trial.

This study, approved by the University of Manitoba Biomedical Research Ethics Board, uses a novel technology called repetitive Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (rTMS), a non-invasive procedure with minimal side-effects.

Healthy seniors needed (60 years and older): Electrovestibulography (EVestG)

EVestG technology has been applied towards diagnosis of and separation of Parkinson disease (PD) / Schizophrenia / Depression (Unipolar vrs Bipolar) / Meniere's Disease / Controls [6-19]. Sensitivities and specificities so far have been typically above 85%.

EVestG is used as an objective technique for analyzing brain signals to detect neurological and mood disorders compared to healthy brain signals.

Dr. Gerald Niznick College of Dentistry Rady Faculty of Health Sciences

A randomized clinical trial of silver diamine fluoride (SDF) to arrest Early Childhood Caries in young children (pdf))

A FREE non-invasive treatment (no drills!) using Silver Diamine Fluoride (SDF) to stop decay from getting worse. We will apply SDF and take plaque samples. Children under 6 years of age with active cavities and their parents or caregivers.

 Scaling up the Healthy Smile Happy Child Initiative (pdf)

This study has 2 components: 1) an interview with First Nations and Metis caregivers of children under the age of 6 about their behaviors, knowledge, attitudes about early childhood oral health; and 2) a free dental check-up for their children (under 6 years of age).

The role of taste and oral microbiome on caries risk in young children (pdf)

This study involves identifying how genetic variation in bitter and sweet taste genes and oral microbiome are involved in determining young children’s susceptibility to severe early childhood tooth decay.

We are looking to interview Children’s’ Oral Health Initiative (COHI) staff and parents of young children and community members about their experiences with COHI.  We will explore COHI’s value and impact on children’s dental health. What aspects of COHI are working, what is not working and what could be done to further benefit children and families. End date: June 30, 2020

Identification of Neuroimaging-Based Biomarkers in the Treatment of Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (pdf)

The purpose of this study is to examine how the brain changes after certain events. Our research is aimed at better understanding how the brain changes after an individual has been exposed to trauma. (You can participate whether you HAVE or HAVE NOT been exposed to trauma!) Participation involves an interview, completing various paper/pencil tasks, & 2 MRI brain scans. Participants will be paid $20/hour for their time and effort, for up to a total of 9 hours. If eligible, participants can also receive 12 weeks of psychological treatment for PTSD symptoms, free of charge. Enrollment in the study will be ongoing until August 31st, 2020.

Patient's Emotional Experience in Breast Cancer Surgery: From Diagnosis to Recovery

The purpose of this study is to gain a better understanding of breast cancer patients' surgical experience. By learning about patients' thoughts and feelings before, during, and after their surgery, we hope to improve the care of others in the future. End date: June 2020
