MITACS GLOBALINK 2017 INTERNATIONAL OPPORTUNITIES FOR UNIVERSITY OF MANITOBA STUDENTS

Mitacs is a national, not-for-profit organization that has designed and delivered research and training programs in Canada for 15 years. The University of Manitoba is one of 60 member universities working with Mitacs, providing funding to build partnerships that support industrial and social innovation in Canada.


UNIVERSITY OF MANITOBA’S RADY FACULTY OF HEALTH SCIENCES IS HOSTING A DELEGATION FROM ANAS WAYUU FROM 18 TO 22 JULY, 2016

Anas Wayuu EPSI (Empresa Promotora de Salud Indigena) is a non-profit Indigenous health insurance organization that provides health care coverage to 133,000 people (80% Indigenous) in La Guajira, Colombia. The delegation consists of Dr. Beda Margarita Suárez Aguilar (Executive Director), Rosa Linda Aguilar (Founder and Coordinator General of the Association of Town Councils), John Harold Gómez Vargas (Advisor to the Executive Director) and Jarol Yesid Isaza (Director of Insurance).

Dr. Javier Mignone (Associate Professor, UofM  Community of Health Sciences) coordinates the visit. The group is scheduled to meet with Manitoba First Nations Centre for Aboriginal Health Research (MFN-CAHR), Manitoba Centre for Health Policy (MCHP) and First Nations Health and Social Secretariat of Manitoba (FNHSSM) for research coordination and planning and a number of outreach activities with community partners in Manitoba.

2017 FUNDING CALL: MITACS GLOBALINK RESEARCH INTERNS

The Mitacs Globalink Research Internship (GRI) is now accepting UM faculty submissions for summer 2017.   GRI program pairs faculty in Canada with international undergrads for 12-week research projects from May to September, 2017.

  • Students are fully funded by Mitacs, no industrial participation/contribution is required;
  • Mitacs oversees student ranking and matching;
  • Projects from ALL disciplines are eligible;
  • Top-ranked senior undergrads travel from Australia, Brazil, China, France, Germany, India, Mexico, Tunisia, and Saudi Arabia;
  • Faculty can submit multiple projects and re-submit projects from previous years to maximize their chance for receiving a match.
  • All details to apply and support an incoming research intern can be found here.

BELMONT ESTATE SIGNS HISTORIC MOU WITH THE UNIVERSITY OF MANITOBA
St. Patrick, Grenada-April 25, 2016

Belmont Estate celebrated Earth Day with the historic signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the University of Manitoba, Canada promoting cooperation through educational and academic exchanges in the area of Bird Conservation within agro-eco systems in rural areas, on Friday 22nd April, 2016. The MOU was signed by Ms. Shadel Nyack Compton, Managing Director of Belmont Estate and UM through the initiative of Dr. Nicola Koper, Professor from the Natural Resources Institute of the University of Manitoba in the presence of staff and graduate students from the University.

Ms. Nyack Compton mentioned that the MOU broadly aims at development of cooperation activities between Belmont Estate and University of Manitoba in the field of teaching, research and training. “Through this MOU, academia from the University will be able to coordinate academic and student activities and share in the wealth of knowledge exchange in fields of mutual interests. Similarly, the MOU envisages continued scientific research of tropical, sub-tropical and sub- species unique to Grenada, conservation management programmes, increased capacity building and Bird Conservation awareness among the local community,” she explained.

Dr. Koper said the signing of this historical and landmark MOU with Belmont Estate would not only be beneficial to both organizations but it would go a long way in contributing to scientific research on Grenadian indigenous birds, as well as developing collaboration with other organizations such as St. Patrick’s Environmental and Community Tourism Organization (SPECTO) and St. George’s University (SGU). “We are really excited to have this opportunity to study Grenada’s birds, and to collaborate with Belmont, SPECTO, SGU, and other Grenadian organizations,” said Dr. Koper. “The rural and agricultural habitats in Grenada have many species of trees and other plants, and this contributes to supporting lots of species of birds and other wildlife. Many bird species found here show genetic differences compared with the same species on other islands, so we want to conserve them while also supporting agriculture and tourism. By working here, we can contribute to scientific knowledge, provide information to Grenada’s government to use for making management decisions, train community members to conduct bird tours and surveys, and encourage kids to enjoy and celebrate their environment. We’ve also brought Grenadian university students to study in Canada, and Canadian students to study in Grenada, facilitating a wonderful academic and cultural exchange.”


In observance of Earth Day, the start of the Caribbean Endemic Bird Festival and the signing of University of Manitoba  and Belmont Estate MOU, bird tours were offered at the Estate conducted by Dr. Koper.

CALL FOR STUDENT NOMINATIONS: THE 2ND KOREA ARCTIC ACADEMY JULY 10-26, 2016

UArctic and the Korea Maritime Institute (KMI) are pleased to announce an opportunity for students from UArctic member institutions to participate in the  2nd Korea Arctic Academy in Korea - a one-week study program in July 10-16, 2016 at KMI together with students from Korean universities. http://education.uarctic.org/mobility/korea-arctic-academy/

The schedule for the local program includes lectures on local and Arctic issues by Korean and international experts, and visits to Korean public organizations, institutes, research centres, government departments and private industry.

UArctic members are called upon to nominate up to 2 students per member institution to participate in this program. Institutions should take under consideration when they make the nomination that in the overall selection indigenous students will be prioritized.

Please submit a CV and motivation letter for each nominated student to secretariat@uarctic.org  by March 30, 2016.
 
The following eligibility criteria apply:

  • 20 undergraduate/graduate students from UArctic members are selected for the program. The program is preferably towards institutions with an indigenous profile, as well as students with an indigenous background. The program is open to students of all academic backgrounds.
  • The student should be registered at a UArctic member institution for degree studies
  • The student should have finished at least the second year of study
  • The student is motivated to contribute to enhanced understanding of the Arctic and Korea
  • The student must have sufficient knowledge of English, both oral and written, for academic studies.

The local Korean organizers will cover:

  • Round-trip air tickets between Korea (Busan) and the nearest airport where the student is located
  • Accommodation in Korea during the official Academy period (7 nights)
  • Transportation in Korea for the program activities

Students are responsible on the following expenses, not covered by KMI:

  • Own travel insurance for health and stay for the Academy in Korea
  • Domestic land transportation in home country
  • Personal dinner or transportation beside official arrangement during the Academy
  • Other personal expenses such as passport application or documentations

ELAP: Emerging Leaders in the Americas Program

Canada-CARICOM Faculty Leadership Program

In the past few years, since 2008, the International Office helped coordinate SEP applications, working closely with the faculty supervisors.

Most of the visiting students hosted by University of Manitoba through SEP funding conduct research work only, and as such, do not have access to services that UofM would provide to visitors enrolled in courses. Once the visiting student researcher arrives at UofM, main supports are provided by the faculty supervisor. The International Office coordinates additional documentation, contribution agreement, reporting as well as on-going communication between the funder, the faculty supervisor and other UofM administrative units.
 
In light of recent developments in the International Office’ structure and responsibilities impacting unit workload and priorities, efforts dedicated to supporting international mobility programs, SEP included, is currently under review. For this reason, the International Office is deferring the promotion and coordination of SEP applications for 2016-2017.

UM faculty members who wish to apply for the SEP funding through UM Student Exchange Agreements are advised to consult the Exchange Coordinator in their faculties.
