All student accounts will be disabled on September 1, January 1 and May 1 of each year. Academic accounts will be deleted annually on May 1. You can re-apply for an account if required.

How to use iThenticate

The university has purchased an iThenticate site license for use by members of the University of Manitoba community to check documents such as articles and book chapters that they have written and which are to be submitted for publication, grant proposals, theses and practicums.

You can use the software to check works that you have co-authored, although it is recommended that you obtain the consent of all authors prior to using iThenticate. Resulting reports can be shared among co-authors.

Researchers are not charged a fee to create an individual account nor are they charged a fee to submit and check their documents.

iThenticate can be used by:

  • University of Manitoba authors seeking to ensure they have sufficiently cited their sources.
  • Researchers who are preparing to submit a manuscript for publication.
  • Graduate students preparing to submit a thesis or practicum.
  • Undergraduate students preparing to submit a thesis.

iThenticate cannot be used to:

  • Check manuscripts that faculty are reviewing.
  • Check course assignments for graduate or undergraduate students you are grading as a faculty member.
  • Check someone else's work.
    • Authors should use iThenticate to check what they themselves have authored or co-authored.
  • Check a student thesis or dissertation.
    • Undergraduate and graduate students should request their own accounts and submit their own papers to iThenticate. Their reports can be shared with their supervisor by email or by sharing their folder if their supervisor has an iThenticate account.

Supervisors cannot require their students to submit theses or dissertation chapters to iThenticate. However, they may ask a student to demonstrate that their work is free of any infringement. Students are strongly encouraged to use iThenticate as a tool.

Working in iThenticate

Access to reports

Your iThenticate account and reports are accessible only to you. You may share your reports via email, printout or download or by giving another iThenticate user access to your folder; however, note that any material or communications that you email, post or transmit through iThenticate site are treated as non-confidential and non-proprietary.

Archiving

iThenticate does not add your manuscript to any databases.

Recognized file types

Microsoft Word, Word XML, WordPerfect, PostScript, PDF, HTML, RTF, OpenOffice (ODT) and plain text are all accepted file types that will work with iThenticate.

Revisions

A revision of a previously uploaded manuscript can be uploaded and checked again, to a maximum of five times. You may choose to submit a substantially revised manuscript as a new submission.

Databases that iThenticate checks against

CrossCheck

An initiative of the publisher association CrossRef, CrossCheck is a database populated with content, such as journal articles, conference proceedings and books, provided by more than 365 leading scientific, technical and medical (STM) publishers.

As of 2013, 65 per cent of CrossRef publishers participate in CrossCheck, representing most large scholarly publishers. An increasing percentage of scholarly journals is using iThenticate to check manuscripts submitted for publication.

PQDT is a research database that includes theses and dissertations from more than 1,000 North American and European graduate schools.

Review the User Agreement

Once you receive your log in information, logging in for the first time will prompt you to agree to a User Agreement. Please read the terms and conditions of the User Agreement very carefully.

You will be asked to grant iThenticate a non-exclusive, royalty-free, perpetual, world-wide, irrevocable license to archive and use any paper you submit in relation to its services.
