Website Basics

Navigation & Locating Information

There are 3 main areas for navigation of this website.

The first area is the top navigation bar (pictured to the right). You can always return to the home page of the website by selecting Home from this menu. Should you wish to access a specific page of this site directly, the Site Map option presents you with a list of all content on this website. Finally the Sign In option allows subscribers, authors, and reviewers to access special features (username and password required).

Note how the link you select stays bold to remind you where you have navigated to. (In this example, the visitor is looking at the home page, since Home is displayed in bold characters.)

The second navigation area is the side navigation bar, which provides access to most of the content of this website. Simply click on a link form this menu to view the corresponding page and information.

Note how link for the area you select stays bold to remind you where you have navigated to. (In this example, the visitor is looking at the news page, since News is displayed in bold characters.)

The Visitors From... option is unique from the rest, in that it causes a sub-menu to expand, revealing further choices. From this sub-menu, a visitor can then select an option as normal.

Optionally, a visitor can enter keywords into the search box, then select the Go button to search the website for pages that contain these keywords. The results of the search are displayed in a new browser window, leaving the current page untouched, so you can return once your search is complete.

For example, if a visitor wishes to look up our fax number, but is unsure which link (Contact Us in this case) will give them this information, they could enter 'fax' in the search box and select Go. The search results list will appear, including a link to the Contact Us page, which contains contact information for Mosaic, including the fax number.

The [advanced search] option allows you to perform one of three different kinds of search, including a search of the website (as described in the previous paragraph), a search of the whole World Wide Web (like a typical Google search), and a search mechanism to locate past issues of Mosaic. This issue search enables a visitor to locate a Mosaic issue by year, theme, volume and issue number, title, and author.

Working with Pages

For easy of access and navigation, each page of this site has a consistent structure.

A visitor can always return to the previous page that was viewed, using the back link. This is equivalent to selecting the Back button (often illustrated as a left-pointing arrow) in your browser toolbar.

When viewing a page of this website, any major sections of the page will be listed horizontally, immediately beneath the title of the page. Select these section names to jump directly to where that section begins on the page.

To return to the top of the page at any time, select the back to top link. This is equivalent to scrolling back up to the top of the current page.

Customizing

To make visiting this website more comfortable for you, you can customize the display of the pages.

Visitors can change the size of the text displayed on the site to suit individual preferences and system configurations. Visitors with older systems, which typically display at larger resolutions, may find that the small text size is comfortable to the eye, however visitors with newer systems, which typically display at smaller resolutions, may find the medium or large text size more comfortable.

Simply select the size of text you would like to view. If the display does not change immediately, you may have to hit your browser's Refresh bottom, also referred to as Reload in some browsers, as various browsers handle this function somewhat differently. For more information, or if you have difficulty getting this to work in your browser, please see the help & accessibility info page.

Using the Keyboard

There are 'access keys' available to provide access to the main functions of this website.

The way these access keys are used will vary depending on your browser. For example, in some browsers, you would press ALT + s to access the Subscribe option. Some browsers require that you press ALT + s followed by the ENTER key.

Additionally, you can usually use the TAB key to 'jump' sequentially through the various items (such as hyperlinks and form fields) displayed on a page. Once the desired item is 'highlighted', you can press ENTER to activate the item.
