As an umbrella fund established by UMRA, it is hoped that retirees from the University of Manitoba, both members and non-members, will become donors. Donations may be of any type for which the University of Manitoba can supply a charitable receipt. These include:
- Cash - The University Investment Trust (UIT) issues a charitable receipt for any cash donation of $10.00 or more.
- Publicly traded securities - These may include stocks, bonds or mutual funds. Capital gains taxes on donations of stocks are completely eliminated, either outright or in a will, while also generating the provincial/federal tax credit. Click here for more details including a calculator to estimate the capital gains savings that may be realized with the donation of a security.
- Bequests in wills - Donors may also consider bequests in their estate planning. The bequest could be set up as an endowment once received and would continue to fund the annual award in perpetuity. Click here for special tax benefits available with bequests.
- Other tax-wise estate and financial planning options in funding charitable donations may also be explored including donations of real-estate, art, life insurance policies, annuities, trusts and more. Click here for other gifting options
