Manitoba Centre for Health Policy
Who we Are
The Manitoba Centre for Health Policy is a research unit in the University of Manitoba’s Faculty of Medicine. Operating out of the Department of Community Health Sciences, MCHP and its research scientists study the health of populations, specifically those in Manitoba. Their approach goes beyond the usual definitions of health, like diet and exercise, by looking at patterns on a much larger scale. The research shows measures of health are determined by a number of social factors such as income, education, and employment, in addition to the prevalence of disease, how long people live, healthcare, health programs and policies.
The research at MCHP attempts to address difficult health-related concerns for Manitoba such as improving the efficiency of the healthcare services in the province; examining services Manitobans will need in the future; creating equal opportunities for children from low-income families with children from more economically advantaged families; assessing the accessibility of healthcare services for rural and urban areas of Manitoba and so on. Ultimately, MCHP research focuses on improving the health of Manitobans by providing evidence-informed data to health and social policy planners and decision makers within the Manitoba government and throughout the regional health authorities in the province.
Data and Information
Using anonymized records from the healthcare system such as hospital stays, doctor visits, and prescription information, MCHP researchers link this data with a number of different fields ranging from income and housing, to justice and education―all at the individual level. This information is securely stored, maintained, and developed within the MCHP data laboratory, meaning the personal identities attached to these records are not only private, they’re completely unknown even to the researchers.
Research at MCHP focuses on the following areas:
- Aging
- Children’s Health
- Cost of Healthcare
- Healthcare Services and Performance
- Pharmacare
- Social Determinants of Health
