excerpt: Everyone calls my
house The Big Top. "Come in, I call." It's hard to be a kid when your mother - a circus acrobat- practices on her trapeze in the living room. Dan, Nisha, and Stuie watch in awe as their friend's mother performs her tricks. Gradually, a circus "breaks out" of the costume trunk. A lion tamer, a lion, and an elephant appear in the house. Frustrated by his friend's lack of circus knowledge, the young host joins in to show them how it's done.
Circus Play is a book that celebrates the magical transformation that occurs during imaginary play. Gradually, the characters are transformed into circus animals and actors. The living room gradually becomes a circus tent with a large audience in attendance. Art is the medium that completes the transformation. It is also the medium that conveys the feelings of the children in their "transformed" state. Parents, child care providers, librarians, teachers, and children will enjoy this picture book. The pictures are large enough for group or individual story time. It is a relaxing and fun read! Highly Recommended. Denise Weir is a library consultant with Manitoba Culture Heritage and Tourism, Public Library Services.
