Those who have already encountered Franklin’s Big Hockey Book: A Sticker Activity Book (CM, Vol. VIII, Number 17) will meet more of the same in Back to School for Franklin: A Sticker Activity Book. At the book’s centre are two pages of reusable vinyl stickers. Peeled off their backings, the 20 characters from Franklin books and the 10 school related objects (ruler, globe, baseball) can be placed on one of three heavy, glossy pages. The flap on the book’s front cover folds out to reveal Franklin’s school classroom while the other side of the flap presents what appears to be the dining area in Franklin’s home. The inside back cover is the play area in Franklin’s schoolyard. Some of the stickers have the characters engaged in classroom activities such as reading, writing on the chalkboard, and doing art, while the playground activities include Franklin’s friends who are playing marbles, soccer or skipping.
The book’s remaining black and white pages, which can double as a colouring book, contain 10 activities, such as mazes, connect the dots, spot the differences, word searches, what doesn’t belong, and search and finds. The concluding activity, one that can be shared by an adult and a child, takes the form of a recipe for “Franklin’s Frozen Fly Treats.” The book’s final page provides the correct answers to all of the puzzles.
This slim book’s consumable nature makes it a home purchase item, but adult purchasers will need to decide for themselves if the book’s potential use matches its cost.
Recommended with reservations.
