excerpt:

Computer technology is a big help when developing new treatments. Computers can save time by predicting how a new drug might work in a patient's body. Robotic systems can carry out tests very quickly. One company estimates that testing with robots is 10,000 times quicker than doing the same testing by hand. New equipment can also tailor drugs exactly to a patient's needs, reducing waste and unwanted side effects. (from BioTech: Frontiers of Medicine, p. 9)

These four books form part of the eight volume “Megatech” series published by Crabtree Publishing. The series is aimed at young inquisitive minds and is formatted in the popular "eyewitness" style, a combination of text, anecdotes and pictures. The 8 x 11 1/2 in. pages are colourful, using pictures and some expertly executed drawings. The table of contents lists chapters with intriguing titles (Spare parts) with explanatory subtitles (Artificial organs in the body) for each two-page chapter in each 32-page volume. The glossary at the back of each book provides thorough explanations or descriptions for each term.

The books are topical, mentioning recent events that have occurred in each area. For example, the sinking of the Russian submarine Kursk is discussed in Super Subs, although the controversy that enveloped the rescue mission and which may have caused the sailors' deaths is not mentioned. The possibility of using space as a field of battle is raised in Into Infinity, which also includes an interesting calendar of important events in space exploration and proposed flights for the next 100 years.

Crabtree has a record of publishing useful non-fiction books for children, and the “Megatech” series is up to the mark. Each subject is dealt with extensively so that any young boy or girl will be engaged by the book and may choose any of the subtopics to pursue further reading.

Highly Recommended.
