Bear sets off on a perfect winter morning and meets all of his friends as he tramps up the snowy mountain. All of these animals think that bear is going up the mountain for their own special reason like snowballing or finding bugs and worms. But when they all get to the top and bear is just sitting and enjoying the scene, they express their dismay. Bear has a final surprise as they all climb on his back and have a grand slide down the mountain. The last page of the book is attached to the inside back cover, and it unfolds in an unusual way to show their stupendous slide down the mountain.
This gently humorous story will be a great hit at preschool story times. Young children will enjoy imitating the sound effects of each of the animals. Jan Fearnley has created another beautifully illustrated and delightful tale. Some of her popular previous titles include Mr. Wolf's Pancakes (Little Tiger Press, 1999); A Special Something Methuen, 2000); and Just Like You (Mammoth, 2000). Highly Recommended. Lorraine
Douglas is the head of youth services at the Winnipeg Public Library.
