The following lesson focuses primarily on interactive brainstorming activities to help develop students' concepts of science, brush away false stereotypes of science, and indicate to the teacher the level of preknowledge students bring to the class.Barry Shell is a science writer and the originator of the of the Great Canadian Scientists Project. Kyle Kirkwood, a secondary school science teacher in Vancouver, created the first Canadian website and e-zine for Canadian science teachers.
This valuable resource guide is more than a simple complement to the Great Canadian Scientists Project. The science project sources, in particular the CD-ROM, are meant to provide a resource base for developing individual and group projects in the physical, biological and social scientific areas.
The beginning sections deal with the fundamental questions of doing science. These help the teacher create a conceptual scientific framework in the students' minds. Relevant appendices on writing lab reports and science term papers are also included.
The most useful aspects of the guide for teachers are the individual and small group classroom activities the authors have created. These include book projects, crosswords, game activities, quizzes, media projects, scientific ethics and numerous appendices.
Teachers who use the Great Canadian Scientist Project will certainly find that this guide enhances the project's usefulness. It is a welcome addition to the CD-ROM, website, and text.
