1997 marks the fiftieth anniversary of the graduation of Margaret Lawrence from United College, Winnipeg, then affiliated with the University of Manitoba. In commemoration of this event, the Institute for the Humanities, St John's College, and the Canadian Studies Programme at the University of Manitoba, in conjunction with the Faculty of Arts and Science at The University of Winnipeg, are co-hosting a conference entitled Margaret Laurence and Her Times. The conference will be held at the Delta Winnipeg, May 2-4, 1997. Scholars from across Canada and from the United States, India, and Brazil will be presenting papers representing a range of Humanities disciplines, including Canadian Literature, History, Religion and Women's Studies. In addition to the works of Laurence, we have especially invited proposals dealing with her contemporaries, and comparative work. Plans include a "Conversation about Margaret Laurence" with some who knew her at United College.
