Before British Columbia chose to join Canada four different countries claimed all of it or a portion of it. Name these four countries.
The four countries are Great Britain, Spain, Russia, and The United States. Britain claimed the area in 1778 and conflicting British and Spanish claims for the area were resolved by the Nootka Conventions of 1790-92. As late as 1821 Russia claimed the region as far south as 51. N, only 2. north of the current boundary. By 1825 the Russians had given these claims up. American claims to British Columbia were resolved by the Oregon Treaty of 1846 which extended the existing border the, 49th parallel, to the Pacific. In 1844 American President James Polk had used the slogan "54 40 or fight" to help win election to the Presidency. "54 40" referred to the northern border of Oregon which Polk and many Americans felt should extend as far north as Russian Alaska.
Questions going to the Village last week did not include the following correct answer due to the fact that although posted on time it was received after the question was posted. The question was what is the largest island in Canada that was not in the North West Territories. The answer is Newfoundland.
