excerpt:

So the horse said,

"Oink!'

And the pig began to cluck.

That made the hen quack,

just like the duck.

The noises were wrong all around the farm,

Because the rooster forgot to set his alarm!

In Rooster's Alarm, all the animals are emitting the sounds of other species. It turns out that this is all due to the rooster's neglect in not setting his alarm. One might think this would have some serious ramifications (perhaps rooster might not get the organic grain). However, the animals don't panic; they just carry on producing the incorrect sound, and the rooster sleeps in. All is well.

This is another fun book from the Crabtree "Tadpole" series. It is well illustrated by Ian Smith. The content is interesting as everyone wants to know why the animals are so confused and how the confusion might get fixed . It never does, by the way, and so be prepared to come up with an explanation with your little readers when your they ask what happens next.

Rooster's Alarm is interesting and certainly meets its goal of supporting early readers with an entertaining little story, but I, for one, would like a sequel that explains how this mess gets straightened out!

Highly Recommended.

A resident of Duncan, BC, John Dryden says he never had a rooster with this problem. All of his roosters strangely found their way to roost under his bedroom window.
