In 2007, Reid produced a board book version of her 1987 book, Sing a Song of Mother Goose. That board book, a reduced version of the 1987 work, was reviewed in CM, Vol. 14, No.4, October 12, 2007. This “new” version differs from last year’s board book principally in two ways. Physically, the book is much larger [even larger than the 1987 version]. At almost 28 cm. in height and 25 cm in width, the 2008 volume lends itself to use with small groups. In the board book, each pair of facing pages presented a single poem with the text on the left side and Reid’s familiar plasticine illustrations on the right page. That format has been maintained, but now a small illustration has been added to the text page. For instance, in “Rain,” a worm-carrying robin is found on the left hand page, the suggestion being that “he” is bringing food to the mother-sat nestlings sheltered from the rain in the nest located under the eaves.

While this version is most worthy of purchase, the caution I included in my board book review still stands: “If your personal or institutional library already has the 1987 version of the Barbara Reid book with the same name, do not discard it. Although the board book and the 1987 work share a common title, the earlier, longer volume contained 40 nursery rhymes while the present board book provides but 14....”

Highly Recommended.
