excerpt:

For a downhill skier, the race in Kitzbuhel is like the Stanley Cup and the Super Bowl rolled into one.

Yes, Canada does have sports heroes, although we do not always celebrate them as well as we should. Canadians Ken Read, Steve Podborski, Dave Irwin and Dave Murray were our winners on the European and North American ski circuits in the 1970s and 1980s. For current readers, perhaps in their early teens, this is the generation of their parents and, therefore, ancient history. But ancient history or not, sports legends have to be revived and relived if Canada is to go on winning internationally. Our kids need to learn that there are Canadian winners, and winners who are worthy of respect and admiration. Ken Read, in particular, who has lived largely in Calgary since retiring from professional skiing, has made huge contributions to Canadian skiing and athletics.

Crazy Canucks is a useful book, one which provides facts and information about this great generation of Canadian male skiers while the glossary at the back will be useful for non-skiers. I would have liked some comparison to the fantastic Canadian women skiers and how their records match up. One downside to this book is the poor quality of its paper which shows in the truly awful reproduction of the black and white photos. These photos are very bad indeed, particularly the one on page 49. Today’s young readers, whether skiers or not, expect top-notch visuals with eye appeal.

Recommended.
