The Chirp Book celebrates the 10th anniversary of Chirp Magazine with a compilation of four Chirp books: Laugh with Chirp, Read with Chirp, Play with Chirp and Travel with Chirp. Bob Kain's pictures of Chirp and his other illustrations are at the heart of this book, and they are bright and appealing. The book is all about fun, and each section delivers. The “Play with Chirp” section contains mazes, puzzles and games that children can play, along with some wonderful jokes (which are in fact sprinkled throughout each section as well as compiled in the “Laugh with Chirp” section). “Laugh with Chirp” also contains riddles and tongue twisters along with the perennial preschool favorite, knock-knock jokes.

Knock, knock.

Who's there?

Turnip.

Turnip who?

Turnip the music, I can't hear it.

The “Travel with Chirp” section is comprised of comics, games, and, of course, jokes on the theme of travel. In the “Read with Chirp” section, parents and children will find stories with pictures substituted for some of the words, a perfect read-along tool for pre-readers. The final section of the book is “All About Chirp,” a peek behind the scenes which introduces Bob Kain and shows how he created Chirp. Children get to see some of the prototype Chirps and then learn to draw Chirp for themselves.

Although Chirp is probably older than most of the children reading this book, he appeals to them on their level, and The Chirp Book should keep them entertained.

Highly Recommended.
