It takes talent to make things seem as effortless as they do in poet Robert Heidbreder's new book, Lickety-Split. As the above text excerpt demonstrates, Heidbreder makes poetry seem simple. In reality, however, he has carefully selected (or invented) each word because of the rhythm and sound that it adds to this book. As with all of Heidbreder's work, Lickety-Split is an enjoyable book that has fun playing with language.

Lickety-Split is definitely intended to be read aloud. In doing so, the reader gains a greater appreciation for the care Heidbreder has invested into his word and sound selections. Read aloud, Lickety-Split creates a soundscape that is both intriguing and invigorating. Perhaps above all though, it is simply fun.

internal art      The illustrations for Lickety-Split were provided by Dušan Petricic, and his playful collaboration with Heidbreder is a winner. Petricic has decided to illustrate the text as a tall tale told by a young boy out to impress a pony-tailed young girl.

Because of the sounds of the text, one can listen to the book with one's eyes closed. On the other hand, because of the fun illustrations about a lovelorn boy, one is reluctant to close the eyes for a moment. It makes for a book that young children will want to see and hear over and over again.

Add Petricic to Heidbreder, and it equals enjoyment. The collaboration of these two talented entertainers makes for a fun book.

Recommended.
