excerpt:
Sue Graves’s Mop Top is a beginning reader from the “Tadpoles” series which asks readers to sight read or sound out only high frequency word phrases. Mop Top’s story is about a very shaggy dog whose hair is tied in bunches or hidden under a hat and is eventually cut. Maddy McClellan’s full-colour illustrations provide lots of support for the text for the beginning reader. The beginning reader who is moving beyond pattern books will experience the success of recognizing familiar words in a new text and in a new story in Mop Top. Recommended. Robert Groberman is a grade two teacher at Kirkbride Elementary School in Surrey, BC.
