excerpt:

It was then she heard the sound of the thousands of wings beating the air around them. Cranes were swirling in circles coming down lower and lower around them. Her daddy began to sing, too. Then Chi’ felt so happy she couldn’t help but sing too. When she closed her eyes and sang, she felt her Temma right there, singing with them. She could see her Temma’s smile and even hear her voice in the song of the cranes.

Although this title was included as part of the “Caring for Me Series,” it does not seem to be similar to the others in anything but format. Jeannette Armstrong provides a compassionate story of birth, life and death. Chi’s mother is about to have a child, and while Chi is pleased about the upcoming event, she is extremely sad that her grandmother has died and must come to terms with that sadness before she can celebrate the good news. With the help of her memories and the cranes, Chi and her parents celebrate the circle of life that encompasses us all.

The earthy colours of the pages and the stylized illustrations are an effective accompaniment to the story. And this time, there is a story.

A useful addition for elementary school library and public library collections on grief and the life cycle.

Recommended.
