excerpt:

"Heaven help us, boy," cried the old woman, holding him tightly for fear she might faint. "That's Long Gray Norris! My own mother used to warn me of him, and her mother before. Oh, why did you let him near you, boy, for don't you know what they say?”

"What's that, Gran?"

"If you play with him once, you play to the end and the game never stops until he wins. What did he call the game, anyway?"

"Winner Takes All," said Brendan.

Long Gray Norris is a very bad man, a blight on society, if there ever was one. Brendan doesn't know this until it's too late, but he's really not worried, because after all, he's the "best in the land" at so many things. Again and again, he bests Long Gray Norris and takes home the gold. Then one day, Brendan's very kind heart forces him to give up his win to save a nest of baby eagles. He loses his freedom to Long Gray Norris and must complete some perfectly impossible tasks or face death. But his kindness and sacrifice for others brings him help when he most needs it.

There may have been no moral intended, but this truly delightful story, written by Malachy Doyle, will help children realize that kindness reaps rewards and bullies don't always win. The detailed and colourful illustrations by Sholto Walker highlight the characters and plot and are as enjoyable to look at as the book is to read.

Highly Recommended.
