For the many fans of singer/songwriter/storyteller Michael Mitchell, the appearance of his Big Canadian Music Book is very good news. The book is intended to accompany Mitchell's three volume CD collection of songs called Canada is for Kids. There are a total of 40 songs in the three discs, each of which has a distinctly Canadian theme or setting. The 59 page soft-covered songbook is comprised of the music charts, lyrics and companion notes for every song from all three CD volumes.

The Big Canadian Music Book is a wonderful resource for elementary teachers. It will enhance the music or the Canadian studies curriculum across the grades. It will be particularly useful for teachers and parents who have purchased the 3 volume Canada is for Kids set and who have the ability to accompany young singers on piano or guitar.

For the lucky children who have enjoyed one of Mitchell's presentations, access to the words and the tunes should be a great spur to their musical memories.

The cost of musical scores being as high as it is, Michael Mitchell's Big Canadian Music Book's modest price tag of $20 makes it something of a bargain. Elementary school librarians should be sure to have the book in their collection for Kindergarten, music, social studies and language arts teachers. Parents who are home-schooling their children will no doubt find the book equally valuable, particularly if they have been able to acquire the three volume CD set.

A minor drawback to the songbook is its binding which is stapled rather than sewn. Using a spiral ring binding might have produced a sturdier and slightly easier to handle volume (especially when it is used on a music stand).

Highly Recommended.
