DON'T BE SCARED, ELEVEN
Volume 21 Number 4
Here is another travelling story with Jesse and her parents. This time they are travelling by bicycle, with Jesse riding in her trailer with her toy elephant named Eleven. As they travel, Eleven becomes restless, so Jesse soothes him with kind words and snacks. With all the snacking, Eleven begins to grow and grow until he can no longer fit into Jesse's trailer.
In a very few simple words, Richard Thompson has managed to convey a feeling of travelling from a young child's perspective, a child who, while enjoying the adventurous experience of travelling, spends a lot of the time being a little bit frightened and wondering, "Are we there yet?"
Eugenie Fernandes' wonderfully whimsical illustrations with varying points of view are a perfect complement for this gentle story.
