Stephen Leacock fans have probably been wondering for years what has been happening in Mariposa since it was exposed to the world in Sunshine Sketches of a Little Town. Bickerstaff has finally provided us with this long awaited update. Actually, what we have here is an attempt at a humorous look at the machinations of life in a small town that seems to be paranoid at not being a big town a common occurrence that will be readily recognized by anyone familiar with small-town life.

The incidents described in this book make a somewhat interesting study, but I think they were meant to be humorous. Unfortunately, I did not find them uproariously funny, probably because I am a librarian, and as Bickerstaff points out in one of his sketches "one of the most important professional attributes of a good librarian is the complete and utter absence of a sense of humour." However, at risk to my reputation as a good librarian, I must admit to an occasional chuckle, especially at the sex scandal.

I rather doubt that there would be a great interest in this book at a school level. The themes of most of the incidents are adult. The non-librarian adult population might even find the book humorous.
