1984 September

As a souvenir of the proclamation of the Constitution, this largely pictorial bilingual volume is primarily of browsing interest. Large format (approximately 31 x 31cm), sturdy binding opening flat, and heavy coated paper are appropriate to the content. Print is clear and photographic reproductions are of high quality.

There is a brief account of Canadian constitutional development from New France to 1980 initiation of the patriation process. Following chapters are almost entirely pictorial with explanatory captions. Most illustrations are in colour. There is a survey of constitutional history in archival material (portraits, maps, documents) from the fifteenth-century to 1977. A pictorial essay describes constitutional conferences 1964-1981; another depicts preparations for the April 1982 ceremony. A final section records the ceremony itself, the pageantry and ceremonial and reactions of spectators.
