SPIRIT OF PLACE
Lucy Maud Montgomery.
Volume 11 Number 1.
Fans of Anne in Anne of Green Gables and its sequels, will not only remember Anne for her lively and imaginative doings but will surely recall Anne's deeply rooted love for her natural environment. Prince Edward Island is the setting for the Anne stories, and it is there that Lucy Maud Montgomery lived during her developing years.
The first Anne book was published in 1908. Over the years up to the present the series has become well known by both children and adults around the world. But what about the author, Lucy Maud Montgomery?
Spirit of Place serves to help the reader become acquainted with Montgomery by using a unique approach. Quotations have been carefully selected from her personal letters and diaries. They are then used as captions for photographs that stunningly portray many of Prince Edward Island's natural surroundings, much as Montgomery saw when she was growing up.
The four pages of introduction to the book give the factual background on the life of Montgomery. The remainder is page after page of scenes accompanying quotations composed by Montgomery. The spirit of Prince Edward Island is there between the covers, thanks to Lucy Maud Montgomery whose own spirit took her beyond the mundane and helped to extend our horizons to see the beauty in people and in nature.
