You are cordially invited to a screening of the film: The Trib: Story of an Underdog Newspaper.

A documentary tribute to the life and times of the Winnipeg Tribune and its historic place in the city’s newspaper culture has been produced for MTS TV, and will premiere on MTS this Thursday, December 6, 2012.

However, a “sneak peek” screening of The Trib: Story of An Underdog Newspaper will be shown on Wednesday, December 5, 2012, in the University of Manitoba Libraries’ Archives & Special Collections.

The Winnipeg Tribune, one of western Canada’s oldest newspapers, was founded in 1890 by L.R. Richardson and D.L. McIntyre who scraped together $7000 to take over the press and premises of the old Winnipeg Sun. (Not the one today, obviously, but the original Winnipeg Daily Sun that was published from 1881-1885.)

Struggling under the restraints of outdated equipment and no telegraph service, the Tribune survived and, with the aid of Winnipeg’s growing population and economic boom, it fast became a viable alternative to the rival Winnipeg Free Press. While primarily regarded as an independent liberal paper covering local events and personalities, the Tribune also reported on national and international news. However, after 90 years of operation, the Winnipeg Tribune ceased publication unexpectedly in August of 1980 as a result of negotiations between competing newspaper chains.

After the sudden collapse of the Tribune, the paper’s ‘morgue files,’ dating from the 1930s to 1980, consisting of photographs and folders of clippings on local, national, and international subjects and personalities, were acquired by Archives & Special Collections and are available for browsing by the public. Subsequently, three collections of Tribune negatives were also donated by private citizens. Microfilms of both the newspaper and the subject folders are also available.
