On May 6, 2011, the All Science Challenge will be a day-long science competition for more than 120 Grade 6, 7 and 8 students from 14 Winnipeg-area schools. Hosted for the second year by University of Manitoba science students, the All Science Challenge is a fun-filled day of competition and camaraderie that’s part of a nationwide Let’s Talk Science outreach program designed to excite and inspire the next generation.
Following the opening ceremonies, teams will participate in two rounds of questions with professors, staff and university students serving as judges. Teams will test their knowledge in a range of disciplines, such as earth sciences, engineering, biology, chemistry and physics.
In the afternoon, teams will compete in a hands-on design activity, where they are challenged to build an object with the materials supplied to them. The top three teams will then face off in a final elimination round. The last team left standing will become the All Science Challenge Champion. In a previous All Science Challenge, students were tasked with building a bridge capable of holding a bottle full of water with only plastic cups, post-it notes and duct tape.
WHEN: Friday, May 6, 2011, from 9:30 am - 3:00 pm
Photo opportunities and interviews available during the design challenge (12:10 pm to 1:10 pm) and during the final elimination round at 1:15 pm.
WHERE: E2-229, Engineering and Information Technology Complex, University of Manitoba
