The Faculty of Dentistry and MedEdPORTAL are pleased to announce that Dieter Schönwetter has been appointed as Associate Editor for “Building Oral Health Training Capacity in Medical Education”.
This major initiative will aid physician understanding of the oral-systemic impact on overall health in order to prepare clinicians to provide comprehensive coordinated care through materials made available via MedEdPORTAL, serving as a model oral health in medicine curriculum collection.
“It is fitting that Dr. Schönwetter will be leading this international effort as our Faculty of Dentistry has become one of the most widely recognized authorities on this topic through its International Centre for Oral-Systemic Health,” said Anthony Iacopino, Dean of Dentistry and ICOSH Director.
“Dieter’s new role will provide further opportunities for leadership in this area and will facilitate dissemination and implementation of the various materials produced through the Centre. Additionally, it offers further support for all those involved in interprofessional education linking oral health to overall health and new models of patient care.”
An Associate Professor and Director of Educational Resources and Faculty Development with the University of Manitoba’s Faculty of Dentistry, Schönwetter has cross-appointments with the Department of Psychology, the Faculty of Education, and the Department of Medicine Education.
As a social psychologist, he explores the cognitive dynamics between effective teaching and student learning and is well known for his research on graduate student development in Canada and more recently in his work on digital curriculum in oral health education. He is the co-editor of the Canadian Journal for the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning and a consultant for the Academy for Academic Leadership.
This innovative collection, made possible through partnership with the Association of American Medical Colleges and the US government, will bring important oral health concepts into medical education within a resource area where faculty and students can access educational tools, learning resources, and curricular materials related to oral-systemic health.
MedEdPORTAL (www.aamc.org/mededportal) is a free peer-reviewed publication service and repository for medical and oral health teaching materials, assessment tools, and faculty development resources.
