The Marcel A. Desautels Faculty of Music Musical Theatre Ensemble presents one of their broadest spectrums ever at this year’s annual production on February 4th and 5th at the Gas Station Arts Centre.
Titled “Our Finest Dreams”, the evening features 33 students from five different faculties, including music, business, engineering, education, and science.
“Everyone is featured. The goal of the ensemble is to feature all of the students in some capacity as solo artists as well as in larger group numbers,” says Donna Fletcher, director of the Musical Theatre Ensemble. “It’s designed to facilitate the growth and development of the students.”
Accompanied by Cary Denby on piano, with additional accompaniment by musicians Steve Denby and Julie Husband, the evenings will feature scenes from Anne of Green Gables, Seussical, Candide, West Side Story, Little Women, Chicago, Shrek, Sweet Charity, Wicked, A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum, My Fair Lady, Street Scene and Title of Show.
Guest choreographer Kimberley Rampersad also worked on several pieces with the ensemble. Rampersad was recently featured as Judy in MTC’s White Christmas, and is the resident assistant choreographer of the National North American tour of Hairspray. Professional guest artists for the Musical Theatre Ensemble have also included Len Cariou and Robb Paterson.
“It’s really exciting to see the development of the students over the years,” Fletcher says. “It’s not only a performance ensemble; it’s an ensemble where I try to give them the tools to do this themselves.”
Performances are 8:00 p.m. nightlyon February 4th and 5th at the Gas Station Arts Centre, 445 River Avenue. Tickets are $10.00 students/$15.00 adults and are available at the Faculty of Music office (65 Dafoe Road) or at the door.
