University of Manitoba art history professor Oliver Botar will release his latest book, A Bauhausler in Canada, Andor Weininger in the ‘50s, tomorrow at Gallery One One One, located on the main floor of the Fitzgerald Building on the Fort Garry Campus.
The book explores the Canadian years of Weininger, one of only two artists from the Bauhaus school in Germany to emigrate to Canada after the Second World War. Although prolific during his time in Canada, Weininger struggled for acceptance while here and eventually moved to New York City after only six and a half years.
Botar calls Weininger “one of the most important modernists to settle in Canada after the war.”
The book, which includes hundreds of illustrations, is part of an international series of exhibitions celebrating the 90th anniversary of the establishment of the Bauhaus school. The event is also part of the opening of the second stage of the Gallery One One One’s “Border Crossings Study Centre” show.
All are welcome to attend. Admission is free.
