The Faculty of Social Work at the University of Manitoba is presenting a unique opportunity to help gain relevant insight and knowledge into current immigrant issues in Canada.

The second annual conference on “Strangers in New Homelands: Deconstructing and Reconstructing of ‘Home’ Among Immigrants in the Diaspora” takes place on November 13, 2009 on the 2nd Floor, University Centre, Fort Garry campus. This one-day event brings together researchers, academics, graduate students, NGOs and government representatives from across North America. The conference will promote exchange of ideas and discussions on aspects of the integration and settlement processes of new immigrants in the Diaspora. The information shared will be essential for those who provide services to and work with immigrant and/or refugee peoples.

“Winnipeg and Manitoba are effectively a new homeland for a variety of peoples representing very different circumstances,” says Dr. Harvy Frankel, dean of social work. “Our city and province are enriched by their presence and it is important that we ensure these ‘strangers’ find their new homeland to be a fair and just place to live.”

The featured keynote speaker for this event is the Honourable Olivia Chow, MP, Trinity-Spadina, Toronto. Additionally, the Honourable Jennifer Howard, Minister of Labour and Immigration, will be giving a luncheon presentation.

The agenda for the day includes registration and breakfast at 8:00 a.m., an opening plenary at 9:00 a.m. and twenty concurrent workshops running throughout the day. Presenters at the workshops include experts from around North America, and topics range from Latino immigrants in the American South to Chinese International Students, African Migration to Canada and Iranian Single Mothers.

Conference cost (includes breakfast, lunch and coffee breaks): $80 - Faculty & Organizations; $30 - Students. Groups discounts are available.
