The Centre for Ukrainian Canadian Studies is proud to present the 2009 Professor Michael and Dr. Iraida Tarnawecky Distinguished Lecture.
This year’s presentation is by Janice Kulyk-Keefer and Natalka Husar.Janice Kulyk-Keefer is professor of English, University of Guelph, and author of some fifteen works of poetry, prose and literary criticism. In 2008 she won the Kobzar Literary Award for her novel The Ladies Lending Library. Natalka Husar is a prominent Canadian artist who has exhibited extensively across Canada and is represented in major public collections including the Winnipeg Art Gallery.
Their collaborative multimedia presentation Blood In The Borshch: The Book is based on a research project funded by the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada. It centres on Post-Orange-Revolution Ukraine as seen from the perspective of a poet and a painter. The project has culminated in the publication of a collaborative book on this same theme; it will be for sale following the lecture.
The Michael and Iraida Distinguished Lectureship honors two prominent Ukrainian Canadian professors of the University of Manitoba: the late Michael Tarnawecky, long time professor of electrical engineering and Dr. Iraida Tarnawecky, professor emeritus of Slavic Studies. It was established in 2001 to bring distinguished speakers to the University of Manitoba to speak on issues pertaining to the Ukrainian Canadian culture and heritage.
The 2009 Tarnawecky Lecture will be held Thursday, November 12, 2009, at 7:00 p.m., in the Great Hall, St. Andrew’s College. Free admission. All are invited. Reception to follow.
