On Friday, November 6, over 250 high school students from across the province will convene at the University of Manitoba to explore the exciting world of health sciences through The Canadian Medical Hall of Fame/TD Discovery Days in Health Sciences program.
The day kicks off with two dynamic lectures and wraps up with a career panel. In between, students will attend two workshops from a choice of 33, where they will visit research labs and teaching/surgical rooms on the university campus and in other affiliated sites.
Media opportunity: Members of the media are invited to join the students for the keynote lecture and drop in one of the hands-on workshops. Students have signed release forms and are available for interviews//photography/videotape.

What: 9th Annual TD Discovery Day in Health Sciences
Keynote Lectures: Medicine: A Career of Endless Possibilities with Dr. Anthony Battad, Internal Medicine Specialist, Canadian Armed Forces, Assistant Professor, Faculty of Medicine, UofM
Discovering Medicine with Carmen Hrymak, 4th year medical student, Faculty of Medicine, UofM
Workshop 1: A Day In the Life of a Family Doctor where students will experience some of the varied activities of a family physician and learn how to suture a wound, read x-rays, and perform a delivery and colonscopy
Workshop 2: An Introduction to Medical Physics where students will use diagnostic imaging equipment measure radioactivity of some common objects.
Workshop 3: Spinal Instrumentation where students will insert spine implants (screw, rods, hooks) into lumbar spine models and find out how spinal instrumentation is used to reconstruct the spine.

When: Friday, November 6, 2009. Keynote lectures: 9:00 – 10:00 am (check in at 8:45 am). Workshops: 10:30 – 12:00 pm (check in at 10:15 am) and then 1:00 – 2:30 pm
Directions: Media are asked to check in at the registration desk in the Brodie Centre, 2nd Floor Concourse between Frederic Gaspard Theatre (formerly Theatre A) and Theatre B.
