The 2023 Reed Day will take place on Saturday, October 14, 2023 from 9:00am to 12:00pm. The deadline to register is October 11, 2023.

Allen Harrington

Allen Harrington is an active soloist, recitalist, adjudicator, chamber and orchestral musician, and maintains a busy schedule outside of his University teaching career. He has appeared as a soloist with more than a dozen orchestras in Canada, Europe, and South America. He has given countless recitals across Canada and toured with the organizations Debut Atlantic, Prairie Debut, and Home Routes Classical. Over the years he has also frequently been heard on CBC radio.  As a bassoonist, Allen plays principal bassoon with the Manitoba Chamber Orchestra and is a regular extra with the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra. Micah Heilbrunn

Micah Heilbrunn is currently principal clarinet of the WSO. He also has served as principal clarinet with the Symphony Nova Scotia, and has been on the clarinet faculty of Brandon University, the University of Windsor, and at the University of Manitoba. Heilbrunn has been a featured artist at festivals across Canada and the United States, and has been heard in broadcasts on the CBC and National Public Radio. Heilbrunn is an active orchestral and chamber musician, and has appeared with the Toronto Symphony Orchestra, and the Canadian Opera Company Orchestra the National Ballet of Canada and the National Arts Center Orchestra. Robin MacMillan

Robin MacMillan has had a unique dual career as an oboist and collaborative pianist, in both Europe and Canada. She currently plays Principal English Horn & Second Oboe with the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra. Since joining the WSO in 2006 she has been a soloist in Copland's "Quiet City" and Sibelius' "The Swan of Tuonela", as well as with Musik Barok and Groundswell. She has also played with the Manitoba Chamber Orchestra, Rochester Philharmonic, the National Ballet of Canada, the Windsor Symphony, and numerous Viennese orchestras. Robin is a dedicated and enthused pedagogue, who was commissioned to revise the Royal Conservatory of Music (Toronto) oboe syllabus. Read more about Robin MacMillan on her faculty page.

Daniel Preun

Daniel Preun is a freelance bassoonist, currently based out of Thunder Bay. He enjoys subbing with various orchestras, including the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra, the Manitoba Chamber Orchestra, and the Thunder Bay Symphony Orchestra. Daniel studied at the Schulich School of Music at McGill University and is also an alumnus of the Desautels Faculty of Music. In his spare time, he enjoys baking and spending time outdoors.

Schedule

Saturday, October 14, 2023, 9:00am-12:00pm

The Reed Day schedule will include four components:

  1. Individual instrument sessions: Participants will learn various playing techniques, instrument care tips, and reed selection and care. 
  2. Small ensemble playing: Participants will be placed in small groups to learn the art of small ensemble and chamber performance.
  3. A refreshment break: Participants will have the opportunity to get to know their fellow Reed Day participants during a break for cookies and refreshments!
  4. Larger group performance: Reed Day participants will perform together as part of a large group.
