What
is a Holter Monitor?
|
- This is a constant
recording or your heart's activity.
- The holter monitor
can record your heart rhythm when you have certain symptoms.
- A diary is used
to record activities during any symptoms you may have.
- The test is painless.

Why is this test
done?
|
- A holter monitor
is done to record the heart's reaction to activity and rest.
|
|
How is the test
done?
|
- Sticky patches
will be placed on your chest. Staff may need to shave a small area ona
man's chest.
- Wires will be used
to connect the patches to a small recorder. The recorder comes in different
sizes. A shoulder or wrist belt may be used.

| Important
points: |
- You will need to
visit the clinic twice. The monitor will be connected on your first
visit. You will have to return the monitor once your test is done.
- Do not remove the
monitor from the carrying case.
- Do not disconnect
the wires or patches.
- Do not get the
monitor wet. Do not shower, bath or swim.
- Keep a diary showing
the exact time of activities, emotions or any symptoms.

Activities:
- Eating
- Alcohol or caffeine
drinks
- When your bowels
move
- When you urinate
- Sudden changes
in position
- Sexual activity
- Exercise
- Sleeping
Strong emotions
Medications (including
over the counter drugs)
Problems:
- Dizziness
- Headaches
- Pain
- Heart racing or
pounding
- Feeling tired
- Shortness of breath

Holter analysis

| What
will I do if a patch falls off? |
| Reconnect
the patch and record in your diary. The holter may have to be redone if
the patch is off for too long. Do not hesitate to ask us any questions.
