Program Highlights

Welcome to the University of Manitoba's Postgraduate Core Training in Adult Cardiology. As a trainee in our program over three years, you will acquire the necessary skills and knowledge to excel in the field of Cardiology. The Cardiology Division is primarily located at St. Boniface General Hospital, where interaction with other members of the Department of Cardiac Sciences, including the sections of Cardiac Surgery, Cardiac Anesthesia and Cardiac ICU, promote a comprehensive approach to the cardiac patient.

Trainees will be exposed to clinical cardiology (CCU, wards, consults, and clinics), noninvasive cardiac imaging (echocardiography, nuclear cardiology, cardiac CT and cardiac MRI), electrophysiology (pacemakers, defibrillators, EP studies and cardioversions) and interventional procedures (cardiac catheterization). The interventional program provides a high volume, diverse exposure to angiography, complex coronary intervention, intravascular ultrasound, hemodynamic studies, endomyocardial biopsy and rotational atherectomy with active planned development of valvuloplasty and structural intervention programs. The program further provides exposure to state of the art 24/7 primary PCI infarction care. As there are currently 7 residents in the Adult Cardiology Training program, and no subspecialty fellows, the trainee will develop expertise in management of acutely ill cardiac patients and first hand exposure to a number of invasive procedures. Additionally, trainees will participate and present research (basic science and/or clinical research) projects with the close collaboration of the St. Boniface General Hospital Research Centre, Cardiovascular Health and Research Outcomes in Manitoba (CHaRM) group, and the Department of Cardiac Sciences.

The trainee will be exposed to a number of educational rounds including:

Monday: Cardiology grand rounds; Advanced Noninvasive Cardiac Imaging Rounds; Pacemaker rounds; Physical Examination rounds

Tuesday: Case of the week rounds; RCPSC practice style written examinations

Wednesday: Cardiac Catheterization rounds; Combined Cardiac Sciences Rounds

Thursday: EKG rounds; Academic ½ Day; Service rounds

Friday: Resident Teaching Rounds

Our goal is to produce strong Clinical Cardiologists/ Clinician Scientists who will be able to adapt to the many changes in the specialty of Cardiology which will occur in their professional lifetime.
