Customizing your feeds
FindArticles.com (from looksmart)- do a search using the available search window. When the results are displayed look for the Orange RSS icon near the top of the page to capture the feed. Note: this engine searches a number of journals and newspapers but I have heard that the citations are not always accurate when you wish to find the article.

HubMed (customize a feed from PubMed!) - this is a nifty tool which allows you to create a PubMed search and run it in HubMed. The results from HubMed can then be sent to your RSS aggregator as an RSS feed. You can use free text, boolean and / or MeSH headings in your search of HubMed, just as you would with PubMed. The creator of HubMed Alf Eaton has also created a bookmarklet for Firefox browser users of the University of Manitoba. When in HubMed, click on the bookmarklet then click the SFX link for the article you are interested in and it will display the UM Links information. UM Links provides access to the online and paper journals of the University of Manitoba.

Instructions from Alf

"If you look at the second paragraph of this entry:
http://hublog.hubmed.org/archives/001022.html
you'll see a LocalSFX bookmarklet that should do what you need, hopefully.

To use the bookmarklet, drag the link to the bookmarks toolbar in your browser. Then, go to a HubMed page like this one:
http://www.hubmed.org/display.cgi?issn=00221767&uids=12471148
and click the bookmarklet. The SFX and PubMed links should now have been turned into links to your local services."

Recommendations

Why are these feeds recommended?
A large number of these news feeds obtain information from a number of standard sources. This can cause some overlap in the news items you recieve. The recommended feeds have enough unique content in them to give you a sense of what is going on in health and medicine news.

Why are none of the journal feeds recommended?
None of the journals are recommended because each individual person has a unique subject area that they are interested in. Therefore, it is better for the individual to subscribe to those journal feeds which interest them the most.

Get these Health RSS feeds
  One by one
Click on the  Firefox RSS icon next to the title of the news feed. This will open up a web page displaying code. Copy the URL from this web page. Open up your news aggregator software (we use Bloglines) and add the copied URL to your aggregator.

  All at once

Most news aggregating software has the ability to import lists of feeds from something called an OPML file. The Health Sciences Libraries has created this file for you to download and import. It lists most of the Health Sciences RSS feeds on this page. The exceptions are the journal feeds which are too numerous to collect all together in one location and the listings of multiple RSS feeds. Download this file HealthSubscriptions.xml and import it into your aggregator to quickly connect to the latest in health news.

Bloglines users can follow these instructions:

  • Click on the OPML file.
  • From your browser's menu click File - Save As.
  • Save the file to your computer or storage device.
  • Open Bloglines and login.
  • Click the My Feeds tab.
  • Click Edit.
  • Scroll to the bottom of your list of feeds.
  • Click Import Subscriptions.
  • Browse to the OPML file and click Import.
