- GeoRef (Dafoe Reserve GovDocs Can1 Cs8.7 1996 92-0085 CD-ROM) This is a data retrieval and tabular output tool with software and data. It includes 1996 population and dwelling counts for all standard levels of geography except for postal code, and, in some cases, 1991 census population counts. GeoRef has been updated by GeoSuite. Access and restrictions: GeoRef is available to walk-in patrons in Elizabeth Dafoe Library. Patrons must borrow the cd-rom from Reserve and take it to workstation LabDaf13 in Computer Classroom #2, where it can be used. GeoSuite is available to current faculty, students and staff of the University of Manitoba for non- commercial purposes. - National Overview: Population and Dwelling Counts (GovDocs Can1 Cs8.71996 93-357). This publication includes data for: Canada; provinces; territories; federal electoral districts; census divisions; census subdivisions; designated places; census metropolitan areas and census agglomerations; primary census metropolitan areas and primary census agglomerations; urban, rural and fringe areas; and forward sortation areas. Reference maps show the name, boundaries and location of census divisions, census subdivisions, census metropolitan areas, census agglomerations, and federal electoral districts. A paper version of this product is available in The Government Documents area of Elizabeth Dafoe Library.
- Population and Dwelling Counts: This product, located on the Statistics Canada website, includes counts and urban/rural split for Canada, provinces, and territories, for 1991 and 1996. It includes counts for Census Agglomerations and Census metropolitan areas. It also lists the 50 Census subdivisions with the greatest percentage population growth and the 50 Census subdivisions with the greatest percentage population decline.
- Postal Code Counts: is a new product for 1996. This CD-ROM contains population and dwelling counts for forward sortation areas (first three characters of the postal code) or all six- character postal codes reported by respondents. Windows-based software enables users to perform simple data manipulations such as searching the data set for specific postal codes, importing groups of postal codes for which counts are required, and exporting groupings of postal codes. Documentation and reference materials are contained on the CD-ROM. SERIES: illustrates the analytic potential of census data by looking at
trends and allowing users to do more detailed analysis themselves. It
consists of 154 cross tabulation tables on seven cd-roms. Titles of the seven
cd-roms are:

Aboriginal, ethnic origin and visible minorities, labour market
activities, household activities, place of work and mode of transportation,
education, mobility and migration, sources of income, earnings and total
income, family and household income, social and economic characteristics
of families, occupied private dwellings and housing costs. Geographic coverage
is for Canada, provinces, territories, and Census metropolitan areas. Many
of the tables include comparisons with data from earlier censuses.

PROFILES. City of Winnipeg and Statistics Canada. This site provides
basic 1996 Census univariate demographic information, such as: population,
marital status, families, households, income, citizenship, languages,
Aboriginal, visible minorities, education, labour force, mode of
transportation, mobility and dwellings. Users can select: Manitoba, Capital
region, Capital region excluding Winnipeg City, Winnipeg Census
Metropolitan Area, Winnipeg Census Metropolitan Area excluding Winnipeg City,
City of Winnipeg, Non- inner city, Inner city, Inner ring, Downtown, the
15 wards of Winnipeg (St. Boniface, Transcona, Elmwood, ...) and 228
neighborhoods (The Maples, Garden City, ...). Users can select wards and
neighborhood areas from maps. Only one table, Total Population, gives
retrospective statistics, back to 1971. Statistics are available in Adobe

It is aggregate data, but it presents individual census characteristics, i.e. univariate distributions. Geographical coverage is for: Census divisions (CDs) and subdivisions (CSDs), Census metropolitan areas (CMAs), Census agglomerations (Cas), Census tracts (CTs), Federal electoral districts (FEDs), and Forward Sortation Areas (FSAs) (first three digits of the postal code). Population figures for the 1991 Census are provided for comparison purposes.

- The Census Public Use Microdata Files (PUMFs) are 3% samples of the anonymous responses from the 1996 long form (2B) questionnaire.
- Non-aggregated data: Patrons can utilize raw data to combine or manipulate variables to meet their own data research needs or requirements. They can generate cross-tabulation tables that are not included in other census products, or analyze relationships between variables with a number of statistical steps. To ensure confidentiality, the data was restricted to provinces, territories, large metropolitan areas, census metropolitan areas, and some large municipalities.
- Confidentiality: The ensure confidentiality of the respondents, several measures have been adopted. Some collapsing of categories was necessary, so, for example, there is no occupation category for physician or nurse, rather both are included in "occupations in medicine and health". Some variables, such as ethnic origin, have less detailed information available for some geographic areas than for other areas. Some suppression, rounding and other measures were also taken.
- Access and restrictions: Data Library Services, at the University
of Manitoba Libraries, disseminates the PUMFs under the Data Liberation
Initiative. As part of this agreement, data is restricted to current students,
faculty and staff, for educational and research purposes. For more
information, please read the
Conditions of Use. The Census PUMFs are disseminated on three CD-ROMs:
one for individuals, one for households and housing and one for families.
Each contains the raw data file, syntax files, plus the data file in Beyond
20/20 format. These CD-ROMs are available from Data Library Services.
The data has also been installed on the Data Library Services workstation,
located in Dafoe Library, in both Beyond 20/20 format and in SPSS format.
The Individuals PUMF can be accessed through the Canadian Census
Analyser.
