1996 Census of Canada Pathfinder

  • This document is designed to assist individuals in locating products from the 1996 Census of Population, as collected and published by Statistics Canada.
  • A Census is a portrait of Canada at one point in time.
  • A Census of population and agriculture takes place in Canada every five years.
  • Census materials go back to the Talon Census of New France, 1665-66.
  • A Census was held on May 16, 2001. Data will start to be released in 2002.
  • Complete data has been released for the May 14, 1996 Census.
  • The 1996 Census includes over 1700 variables.
  • Census information is a valuable tool for research, because:
    - information is available for small levels of geography
    - there is depth of subject information
    - reliability (usually either 100% or 20% samples)
