Data Library Services - GIS Resources on the Web

This document will assist individuals in locating GIS (Geographic information Systems) resources freely available on the internet.

Manitoba Historical Maps' photos and Historical Maps of Winnipeg, and University of Manitoba: scanned images of older maps.
Manitoba Department of Conservation's Manitoba Land Initiative: topographic data can now be accessed online free of charge. It includes topographic data, base maps, soils maps, land use mapping, cadastral data, forest inventory, digital imagery, geology maps, community base maps, all administrative boundaries, quarter section grids, geographical names, water resource mapping, road maps, and other layers.
Geobase: (Canadian Council on Geomatics) is a web portal providing unrestriced access to geospatial data from authoritative sources. It includes National Road Network data, Canadian Digital Elevation Data, Geographical Names of Canada, Administrative Boundaries, Canadian Geodetic Network data and Landsat-7 Othoimage data.
GeoConnections Discovery Portal "enables the discovery and access of geospatial data for Canada."
GeoGratis: Natural Resources Canada. A site providing free ftp access to Canadian geospatial data (topographic maps, satellite images, tabular data) including the topographic map for Winnipeg

MIRAGE Map Image Rendering DAtabase for GEoscience, Natural Resources Canada. Includes a Surficial geology, Winnipeg, Manitoba map.
Soil surveys - Manitoba from Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada, including a Soil Survey of Winnipeg and Morris
Census 1990-2006 TIGER/Line Data (U.S.)
Geography Network: ESRI portal for GIS data.
GIS Data Sources: University of Waterloo, indexing site for data.
