Data Library Services - Census of Canada

INTRODUCTION:
  • Statistics Canada conducts a Census of Population and Agriculture every five years.
  • The University of Manitoba Libraries provides access to a wide variety of Census materials.
  • Most Census publications are available in the Government Documents area of Elizabeth Dafoe Library.
  • Many Census products are now accessible online. These fall into three categories:
    - Open access: Some products are freely accessible on the internet, with no restrictions
    - Walk-in users: Some products are available to the public through the Depository Services program. In this case, the public refers to walk-in users, that is, they must be in the Libraries to access these materials (in library use). These products can also be accessed remotely by current faculty, students and staff of the University of Manitoba (remote access).
    - Restricted: Access to a few products is made available through the Data Liberation Initiative. In this case, the products can only be accessed by current faculty, students and staff, for non-commercial purposes.
