Data Library Services: Beyond 20/20 Software

Most of the newer Census of Canada Products, and several other databases, are using a data browser, Beyond 20/20, to view data files. This data browser software can be used in conjunction with Internet Explorer and data files referenced by HTML documents.
Users of the Census files, including the public, may access this software in the two computer labs located on the main floor of Elizabeth Dafoe Library.

Data Library Services, at the University of Manitoba Libraries, disseminates several Beyond 2020 products under the Data Liberation Initiative. As part of this agreement, both the data and the software are restricted to current students, faculty and staff, for educational and research purposes. For more information, please read the Conditions of Use, or contact Data Library Services. Use of these services implies an acceptance of the conditions of use. These restricted access data products are accessible from:
Netwoked Databases and Beyond 2020 formated tables.

INTRODUCTION AND CAVEATS:

  • Statistics Canada also provides a link to this software at a Beyond 2020 via Statistics Canada webpage
  • Carleton University has a Beyond 20/20 helpsheet.
  • User guide (Simon Fraser University).
  • Installing a newer version may cause conflicts if a previous version is already loaded on the same workstation. It may therefore be a good idea to delete the files of any previous versions prior to installing a newer version.
  • When working with data files using Netscape and Beyond 20/20, the data browser must be closed before a new file can be opened.

DOWNLOAD INSTRUCTIONS:

  • Download the Beyond 20/20 Browser (18.1 Mb), from Ivation Datasystems, an Ottawa company that has created this software. This is a 32 bit software, version 6 for Windows. There is not presently a Mac version.
  • When you click on the above file, a box will ask you "Run" or "Save" the file. You may want to click on "Save".
  • A dialog box will open, allowing you to select a directory in which to save the program. It's best to choose an empty directory, or, often computers have a TEMP or a WINDOWS/temp directory. When you click on OK or Save, the program will be saved to your selected computer directory.
  • Go to Windows Explorer, find the file you just saved (ProBrowser.exe), which is a compressed (zip) file, and double click to the file.
  • The above procedure will unzip the file, and start the installation procedure. Follow on screen instructions to continue.

SETUP OF BEYOND 20/20:

  • Choose the language of installation, English or French.
  • Choose type of installation, (express, custom or administrator). In most cases, this will be a custom installation.
  • Agree to the terms and conditions of the license.
  • User information: 1. Serial number (leave blank), 2. Name (enter your name) and 3. Organization (enter "University of Manitoba"). When asked to confirm, click on O.K.
  • Choose the directory in which to install the browser (usually the default c:\b2020)
  • confirm your choice of directory
  • When setup is finished, you may be asked to restart your computer.
  • After setup is complete, you may want to go back and delete the compressed file from your TEMP directory
  • You may also want to create a shortcut key to "Brwpro.exe" and drag it to your desktop.

CONFIGURING YOUR WEB BROWSER TO LAUNCH BEYOND 20/20: Once you have installed the software, you may have a window on your screen which states "installation complete", followed by some lines of text. This text should indicate that your desktop version of Netscape has been modified to permit Beyond 20/20 files to be viewed from within Netscape. If you do not get this message, or if it does not work, try the following steps:

METHOD ONE

  • Launch Netscape
  • Point the browser at an .ivt file, such as those found in the Nation Series and click the mouse on the file name
  • Netscape will give an UNKNOWN FILE TYPE message, giving options on how you may proceed; choose PICK AP...
  • Netscape will ask you to CONFIGURE AN EXTERNAL VIEWER, which allows you to BROWSE for a file
  • Locate Brwpro.exe, highlight it and click on OPEN (note that the default location, if you did not change it, may be C:\B2020\)
  • Select OK to configure Netscape to open the file using the Beyond 20/20 software
  • Netscape will ask if you want to open this file, click the OPEN FILE option, and click OK
  • Netscape should now invoke Beyond 20/20 to open and display this file, plus additional .ivt files it may encounter
OR, METHOD TWO
  • Run Netscape
  • Click on Preferences
  • Click on Applications
  • Click on New File
  • For Description of type, enter: Beyond 20/20
  • For File extension, enter: IVT IVD IVX
  • For Mime type, enter: application/x-beyond20/20
  • For Application to use, browse your computer to locate the Beyond 20/20 software, and choose: brwpro.exe
  • Click on OK
This procedure should allow Netscape to invoke the Beyond 20/20 software to view files of this format that are referenced by an HTML document. Don't forget that you must close the Beyond 20/20 software before you can load a different data file.
