This albumen print of a painting was produced under the auspices of members of the Riel family and the Dominion Minister of Agriculture. Following Riel's death in 1885, there was considerable confusion over what Riel had actually looked like. This photograph, in larger cartes-de-visite format, was designed to dispel the confusion surrounding Riel's physical appearance.
