Biographical sketch: Edwin Walmsley, Sr. was born in Lancashire, England on May 31, 1859. He came to Canada from England with his wife and three daughters, Phoebe, Kathleen, and Ruth, after he retired as an army officer in 1908. His two sons, Henry and David, had preceded the rest of the family from England two years before.  Edwin had previously spent twenty-one years of his army career in India attached to the Foreign Office. Most of his family had been born in India where he and his wife brought up their family. Edwin's daughter, Phoebe, was a registered nurse and lived most of her life in Florida.  His daughter, Kathleen, was a school teacher in Manitoba and Florida.  His daughter, Ruth, was a Pay Officer for the Women's Naval Service during World War II, and then worked with the External Affairs Department in Ottawa, Ontario.  Edwin's sons, Henry John and David George, returned to England during World War I after enlisting in the Canadian Army, and both returned to Canada in 1918. David brought his wife, Effie, with him upon his return. By this time, Edwin and his wife, Lizzie Charlotte, had settled in Elm Creek, Manitoba and purchased the Elm Creek Hotel, then known as the Grandview Hotel of Elm Creek. Henry married Mary B. Franzmann of Fannystelle, Manitoba in 1914.  They had one son and five daughters: Edwin Jr., Ruth, Norma, Betty, Marie, and Dorothy. David and Effie returned to England with their sons, Robert George and Sidney Arthur, who both migrated back to Canada and reside in Portage La Prairie, Manitoba. The four generations of the Walmsley family have been members of the Holy Trinity Anglican Church in Elm Creek.
