Biographical sketch: Ian Maclaren Thompson was born September 13, 1896 in Harbour Grace, Newfoundland. His studies at the University of Edinburgh were interrupted by WWI, in which he served. However, he graduated in 1920 with a B.Sc., M.B., and Ch.B. He taught anatomy at McGill University from 1920 to 1927, at the University of California at Berkeley from 1927 to 1936, and at the University of Manitoba, where he served as Head of the department from 1937 to 1965. He was made a Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada in 1947 and of the Royal Society of Edinburgh in 1952. Among many other accomplishments, Thompson was a founding President of the Canadian Association of Anatomists, Chairman of the Canadian Federation of Biological Sciences, and President of the Manitoba Museum Association. He died on December 26, 1981 in Winnipeg.

Custodial history: The fonds was part of a large library collection donated to the University of Manitoba's Neil John Maclean Health Sciences Library by the Maclaren Thompson Estate in 1982.  The fonds was transferred to University of Manitoba Archives & Special Collections at that time.

Scope and content: The fonds consists mainly of daily dispatches dating from October 1899 to June 1902 sent via the Anglo-American Telegraph Company to Harbour Grace, Newfoundland. These dispatches contain news of the Boer War, the Boxer rebellion, and other world news. There is also a copy of the front page of the Montreal Daily Star dated June 2, 1902, and addressed to W H. Thompson. In addition, there is a package label from W.H. Thompson & Co., Chemists and Druggists, Harbour Grace, Newfoundland. Finally, the fonds contains an undated letter from Frank Allen to I. Maclaren Thompson and a portrait and notice of I.M. Thompson from the University of Manitoba Medical Journal, October 1965.
