Biographical sketch: Jake MacDonald was born in Winnipeg in 1949. He received a B.A. in English from the University of Manitoba in 1971. He supported himself as a carpenter and fishing guide for several years before embarking on a thirty plus year career as a writer. He is the author of eight critically acclaimed books in both fiction and non-fiction. He has written several hundred articles and received many awards for his work. He was the recipient of the Greg Clark Award for best outdoor article in Canada in 1990. In 1996, he was awarded the National Magazine Award for journalism. Four years later he won the same award for travel writing. His book House Boat Chronicles published in 2002 won three awards including the prestigious Writers Trust of Canada Prize for non-fiction.
Custodial history: The fonds was donated to University of Manitoba Archives & Special Collections by Jake MacDonald in 2009.
Scope and content: The fonds consists of 8 series. They include biographical and family material, published and unpublished manuscripts, copies of MacDonald's books, poems, short stories, articles, and screenplays, correspondence, day planners, photographs, and tapes. The photograph collection consists of 23 photographs, 3 contact sheets, and 12 CDs of digital photographs. The tape collection consists of 2 compact discs and 4 audio cassettes.
